The article is devoted to the history of the formation and development of pediatric surgery in the South of Ukraine. Knowledge of the history of one’s specialty is one of the most important elements of a specialist’s culture and upbringing.

Peculiarities of pediatric surgery determined the need to separate this specialty, in order to combine the competence of pediatricians and surgeons. So, the organizational formation of pediatric surgery as an independent specialty in Odesa and Odesa region took place in 1937, and in 1938, at the Department of Faculty Surgery of the Odesa Medical Institute, the course of pediatric surgery was organized into an independent department. The outstanding scientists who headed this Department are Ivan Kornman, Viacheslav Snezhkov, Semen Bakkal, Modest Dmitriev, Liudmila Prokopova, Kostiantyn Aleksiuk, Natalia Nikolaieva, Oleksandr Losiev. Their names are forever inscribed into the history of the Odesa School of Pediatric Surgeons. They are our great predecessors, the most important thing in their life was humanity and the life of a child. Many of their students successfully defended their candidate and doctoral dissertations, became famous scientists, heads of scientific institutions. They work as doctors, and the scientific legacy is developing and improving in the work of the next generations of pediatric surgeons.

The staff of the Department came up to the 85th anniversary with new creative plans aimed at improving pedagogical, medical and scientific activities.
